Madisonville Miners 3, Dubois County Bombers 2.
(From Dubois County copied from Ohio Valley League website) In a game that started over an hour late after an afternoon storm swept through the area, the Madisonville Miners thundered to their third win in five games, defeating the Dubois County Bombers 3-2.
Bombers starter Brian Wichman pitched out of trouble in the first two innings, stranding five runners. The Miners came up with a pair of clutch hits in the third, run-scoring singles by Colton Nussel and Rutger Luebke.
Madisonville starter Reid Clements only allowed one Bomber past second base through the first six frames, scattering five hits and a pair of walks in 6 2/3 innings.
Dane Giesler doubled to lead off the Dubois County seventh. Joe Sturino pinch ran for him, later coming around to score on a grounder off the bat of Joe Redburn. The Bombers added another run later in the inning when Glenn Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
DJ Eckert relieved Wichman in the fifth and held Madisonville scoreless until the ninth.
In the Miner ninth, Nick Calandra led off with a walk. Cory Finkler bunted him to second. Calandra moved to third on Isaac Perry’s single. Jacob Murray relieved Eckert and Colton Nussel brought Calandra home with a sacrifice fly.
The Bombers came to bat in the bottom of the ninth trailing 3-2. Joe Redburn led off with a single, but was picked off of first base by catcher Luebke. Then Caleb Lonkard walked and stole second base with two down. Nick Gobert also walked. A double steal advanced both into scoring position. Chase Scott worked another walk to load the bases off of Miner reliever Luke Floer. But Joe Sturino hit a grounder to third to end the ballgame.
Floer earned the win to square his record at 1-1. The loss drops Eckert to 1-2.
The Bombers are now 7-11 on the season. With the win, the Miners record improves to 3-16, 4 ½ games back of the Bombers for fourth place in the Ohio Valley League.
