Miners second baseman Connor Moss delivered a walk-off RBI single with two on and two out in the bottom of the 9th inning to lift Madisonville to a 2-1 victory over the Dubois County Bombers on Saturday night at Elmer Kelley Stadium.
The game was dominated by the starting pitchers, with Miner starter Cameron Smith and Bomber starter Devin Williams each pitching over seven innings of one-run baseball.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when JD Minor led off the frame with Madisonville’s first base hit of the night on a bunt up the third base line. Minor then stole second base, advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Williams, and scored on sacrifice fly to right field by Matt Walsh.
The Bombers got on the board in the top of the eighth, tying the game at 1-1. Morgan DePew doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on sacrifice bunt by Nick Gobert, and scored on a wild pitch from Miner reliever Mathias Brewers.
The Miners won it in the ninth after Cory Finkler drew a walk to lead off the inning. Tyler Greiner then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Finkler to second base. After a strikeout by Wesley Birchmeier and a walk by JD Minor, Moss ended the ballgame with his walkoff RBI single driving in Finkler.
Miner reliever Nicholas Purpera picked up the win after finishing the eighth inning and pitching the ninth. Bomber hurler Zach Freeman took the loss for the Bombers.
The win raised the Miners’ record to 11-10 on the year and moved them to within 2.5 games of the first place Bombers (14-8). The Miners travel to Owensboro to face the Oilers on Sunday, while the Bombers visit Hoptown to tangle with the Hoppers.
